This is probably one of the best card games still around. So you might wanna check it out.
Illuminati is one of iconic games of SJ Games. It is supposedly designed for 2 to 6 players but it plays best with 5-6 players.
Each players becomes an secret organization with a unique goal and special abilities. Each turn players try to control different groups in the world and add them to their power structure. But they also have to defend their structure because rivals can suddenly decide to attack weakest ring in your chain.
The heart of the game are the discussions and pacts between players. There are no set rules for that. Agreements are only binding as long as they are executed instantly. You can offer money to a player and in return demand him not attacking you this turn. He can take the money but there is nothing to prevent him from attacking you. The basic strategy depends on lots of real life diplomacy, and the correct timing of stabbing your friends in the back.
Illuminati is an incredibly deep strategy game with a very simple set of rules. Cards are not collectible so it is not a money sink either. Just heed my warning:
This game will REALLY test your friendships. Either play it with your really good friends or with people you will never see again.

I think I disagree about Hacker. I don't think it works as well as Illuminati, partly because Hacker depends too much on die rolls. With Illuminati the dice are a detail. You want your success number to be 10 all the time. Dice become important when you cannot do that. With hacker though it all depends on the die roll. If you are lucky no one can stop you from winning the game. In my book this makes it an inferior game.
