Never Played Half-Life

I used to primarily play one player games on my PS2, but I've been playing a game with my boyfriend lately and the second controller has been acting really strange.

In the middle of play, everything'll get paused and the screen tells me to plug controller 2 back in... except my hands haven't moved anywhere so it's still definitely plugged into the machine. Jiggling the cord and pushing into the controller has usually worked, but it happened again last night and it didn't. I checked that it was connected, pushed it in further, jiggled it a bit and then it decided to recognize the controller. I haven't noticed the other times, but last night the little light under where it says "analog" was off.

I'm really not sure if it's the controller or the PS2 itself, both are pretty damn old (I think within the first two years of it being released). Has anyone had this problem before? Is there any easy fix for it or should I just buy a new controller?

I go where I please, and I please where I go

Solution: Buy a new 3rd party cheap, and then if it still happens, it's the PS2, if not, get yourself a comfy dualshock. I'm tempted to say controller, but player 2 would be odd, it would usually be player one who fails first. Or maybe that's because I have no friends.

Well, until I started playing LEGO Star Wars II, I hadn't used the machine in probably close to two years (if not more). And it's been back and forth across the country in my checked luggage a few times now, too. So the controller I had plugged into player 2 could have been the one that used to be plugged into player 1 before I went to university. Or it's just a shitty controller (which I'm leaning towards; my boyfriend was trying to play and every time he pressed a button the power in the controller died and then, after my boyfriend finally gave up, it was sitting on the floor and the analog light was flashing on and off really fast).

Looks like I'll be making friends with eBay again. :B Right after I try switching the controllers just to see.

Sounds to me like its the port itself but have you tried switching the 2 controllers? If it still happens in the second slot then it's the console.
It's a shame, but it happens. At least they still make PS2s (better ones, even). The same thing happened to my Dreamcast which was depressing (I'd have to go to Japan or eBay to find one).

I haven't had a chance yet to switch them, but it's gotten to the point where pressing buttons makes it stop working. And then it was sitting on the floor after I convinced my boyfriend to stop trying to play and the little analog light was flashing on and off really fast.

The red anolog light doesn't show up anymore on mine, either. xDD but it's not big deal really.

The plugging in thing though, that's kinda' a big deal.

just buy a cheap controller somewhere! :3

Seems it might have actually just been dust. The controller mostly works fine now. o.O

Oh, and my household has had a Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, N64, two GameBoys, PlayStation, PS2 and XBox at one point or another.

Mine's been doing the same thing Lee. I'll move a certain way and the red light will go off, and I will be told to plug it back in. It takes a lot of annoyance and moving the thing around to get it to work again.

I wish I knew how to fix it. I hate game interruptions. D:<

I'll probably end up going to Blockbuster and getting a cheap controller to use. >:

I switched the controller to the other port and it started working fine. Dave blew into the player 2 port and plugged in the controller that had been working fine. It started twitching out a bit like a week later, so I switched the controllers back and there's hardly been any problem since then (not that we've had much time to play, lol). So I think my controllers just hate me. A lot.

I guess I should be happy that these have lasted so long. I'm pretty sure they're the controllers we got at the same time as the console.

Well, let's just say my little brother is very rough with game disks/controllers/memory cards/consoles in general.

I'm surprised all the consoles still work.

I'm still sore about him cracking Diablo II down the middle. :(
