The Cake Is A Lie

So, um. My computer. It's dead, but not really. Let me explain...

I had a friend over recently (like a month ago) and he accidentally unplugged my computer. My computer restarted and all that good stuff, but when it turned back on it was slow as hell and almost nothing worked. So I tried wiping it (not sure why...) and reinstalling XP and all that good stuff. Nope, still slow, still not working.

I'm wondering if the motherboard is all screwed up? I dunno... Any ideas?

Probably a motherboard or Power Supply problem, does it just not turn on at all? But as far as unplugging it while its running people do that all the time to the computers at my school and they work fine. But it's still could be the cause. Depends on what kind of computer you have the fix/repair could cost from not a lot to quite a bit.

Well it still turns on and stuff and loads my desktop, but it's really slow. And I can't install anything and none of the programs on it work. So I'm not sure. It's about two years old, so it should still work fine... The only thing I can think of is unplugging it like that, but I've done that a couple times before when it froze and it didn't hurt it too badly.

When it freezes hold the power button you might have a Hard drive problem or you could have a virus but since you wiped your HD that probably isn't it. Check how many processes your running, I've had problems like that in the past. You can try your hard drive in another computer to test if thats it or try someone else's in yours. (Vista won't run if you change mac addresses usually though). But for now see how many processes your running and try running in safe mode to see if that changes anything.

Defrag, and make sure it isn't full of dust (which clogs the fans and makes things run hot and crappily). By wipe you do mean reformat right? The only thing I can think of that would make it not be able to launch programs is an OS related thing, which if you reformatted the drive would fix. It might be the motherboard, it can make weird things happen. Have you run a program like Memtest86? It could also be the ram.

    Remembers What Arcades Are

I had this happen with my computer. I was going for a LONG trip & didnt want something to happen to it so i shut the thing down & un-pluged it. When I came back I had the same issue & at some point it wouldn't even tun back on. I found out the Power Supply had to replaced. Why it even stop'ed working was odd but it happened again on another computer & so we had to change that power supply out too. I suggest trying that before getting new board.

Yeah, but mine still turns back on and runs and stuff, just really slowly and a lot of the programs have errors.

Then it sounds like the mother board. If you can, try makeing your heard drive a slave onto another computer, to see if it runs slow. If it doesn't, the drive is fine & the mother board is doing it. That sucker can get weird do to power issues. Then test the mother board with another drive. One or the other has to give. Try to see what dmg is done to it 1st before you replace the whole thing. Some times it something small, even the fan could be doing.
I wish computer could tell you whats wrong with them other then just "Error".
But go slow & take it one item at a time. hopefully it's something that won't cost much.

When you turn on your computer, go to the boot menu and run a diagnostic. My computer was screwed up a couple of months ago, but the dude on the Dell hotline just had me run a diagnostic, then sent me the free part. One week later, the computer was good as new. ^^

      Dude, you got a Dell?

Those kind of tech/diagnostic tools are only included on machines bought from places like Dell - if you built it from home, you won't have it. Hell, most manufacturers won't put them in.

    Stole Your Kill

Sounds like (for some reason?) your mobo could have shorted, causing a reset on the BIOS. This would cause all clock frequency and mulitplier settings to reset to default so your CPU would be running like a snail with rheumatism. Dunno what the odds of that are, but I did have something similar happen to me yeeeeears ago. Most likely the power supply I'd have thought though.

Pft, msconfig is lame. Restart for changing startup items? Hell no.

Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel is the way to go. Doesn't even need installing :B
