    So as you all know, or should know because you're so lovingly devoted to the dev staff, I'm a game modeller. Or... well... okay, so I'm going to school to become a character modeller for games. Right. Anyway, I'm wondering if there are any other modellers out there in the crowd? And if so, what are the methods of modelling you find most productive?

    I'm a fan of POLYs (polygons) over Sub-DIVs, and well above NURBs. NURBS are... fucking useless. :P And Sub-DIVs are too round to mass-in objects. I most often start off with a cube and pull out/extrude faces to mass in the basic shapes. Then it's off into vertex mode to more fine tune vertex positions before cutting and splitting faces to add detail. (If you couldn't tell, I use Maya... not 3DS Max.)

          I have a copy of Maya installed on le Mac (PLE, no piracy here guv'!) and do keep meaning to start using it, but by the time I get around to it, it's too late to even begin to interpret all those shiney buttons >.>

          I do, however, enjoy Blender. Mainly because of the potential for using a cluster as a rendering unit, rather than relying on one rig :B I've not seen something similar for Maya, while I'm sure it exists, I expect it's something the PLE can't do, and cracking Maya is like walking to Mars.

              Every once in a while I install one of the many copies of whatever that I have laying around (that I bought from several different student friends who got them at very low prices :mischief:) and try to go through some tutorials.

              A few hours later, as blood is streaming out of my ears, I decide to go back to code. :nod:

                  I tried to learn on my own once and it was incredibly painful. Once you have a class everything starts to make sense and you can pick up from that point.

                          Yeah. A while ago I was working in a computer lab and one of the people gave me a whole bunch of programs to try, like bryce, carrera, hexagon, and something else I can't remember. And I tried going through the tutorials, but they didn't really make any sense, but in the class my teacher explained everything so it made sense. He was really good, he actually sold a concept design to lexus for a car model.

                                  Yeah, he was very cool. He was getting a petroleum engineering degree at my school. They pay students that have an expertise in a particular subject to teach classes. I'm hoping that maybe I can get good enough to teach a class myself eventually.

                                  I use Wings3D and Bryce5 to mess around with things. I'm currently working on (when I can) a project concerning mines that float in the air..and are cloakable, for a game I play on occasion.

                                  I just have to get off my arse and find someone who is a good code monkey for lua and such to go help me pull it off properly (since I haven't learned anything about lua as of yet). :>

                                            To be quite honest, I'd love to see NURBS become more mainstream. Sure polygons render faster, but nurbs just have a much more smooth aproch to them, resulting in smoother edges and a lesser need for anti-aliasing. I've yet to see a game engine that implements them well though.

                                                You can completely overcome that with proper displacement and normal mapping. And if you also take into account the fact that game engines render based off of tris, it doesn't make sense to switch to NURBs rendering.
                                                Why you see a lot of edges in games is because there often isn't enough processing power on the average game machine for live rendering of displacement and normal mapping at the same time. It's different for movies because they only have to render once and it's not a live render (and they have the money to farm it out for processing power). All that cloth you see in movies... polygons. :D


                                                And aside from all of that... NURBs are a BITCH to work with! haha

                                                    Na nurbs arent that bad to work with. They're just bezier curves on a 3d scale. If you understand beziers, then the nurbs aren't half bad.

                                                    I took a class on 3dmax last semester and we did a lot of poly modeling. I'm planning on continuing it during the summer to get much better at it, but I found it enjoyable, I'm just too much of a perfectionist for my own good. I'm planning on posting pictures someday when I have my models to a state where they are flawless (if they ever reach such a state). Maybe when I post them you can give me hints on what I could have done better...
