So today, my friend brought up the subject of Philosophy, as a general topic. This evolved into a talk about Objectivism.

Sorry, my Pc messed up and entered the post as is.
As I was saying, Objectivism, in a nutshell, is the philosophy of Ayn Rand. For all you FPS gamers, Objectivism is the philosophy by which Rapture in BioShock is run. This began a discussion on the "Perfect" society, in our eyes.
So, lets talk about this hypothetical perfect society. The best way to do such a thing would to put it underwater, and for it to be run on geothermic energy. It would probably be covered by an airtight dome, with oxygen being supplied by trees and plants.
As for the society itself, it would function on little to no government, the need for politicians replaced by a Republic system where everyone has their own voice. Hypothetically, we would be able to have a computer system of some sort, but if not there would be some sort of Forum.
Weekly, every man, woman, and child would attend this Forum, and decide upon the laws that govern the city (for the most part).
Government-run facilities would go as far as the city's geothermic power and a Police force. And maybe bathrooms.
For the more distasteful side of things, children deemed a leech to society (mental retardation, paralysis, blindness, etc.) would most likely be killed. Or shipped to the mainland. In a ship that sinks in the middle of the ocean. Not that I have anything against those sort of people.

Children would attend schooling that sought comprehension rather then cram things down their throats, and afterwards attend a trade school (whatever it may be). Adults would work, wherever it may be (Disability and Maternity would be excused), and taxes would pay the Police, geothermic workers, and the Plumbers to clean the public restrooms.

And, I just went off on quite a tangent.

That is my perfect society. What is yours?

Hm. For my perfect society, I'd have to say that there be no "authority." That's the main peeve I have against our society today. It would definitly have to be in a secluded place like a island or under water like you said. There would be no one ruler or central government, but perhaps a system of elders, if you will, would be in place to convene once every so often to discuss what would be best for the people. They would then share their ideas with the paople and would decide what laws should be in place by a local public majority vote. The elder in a household would be in charge of making sure that the law was kept in his home and by his family. If there were children born with blindness or mental retardation or something like that, it would be up to the family to decide what was to be done with them. All new people who wished to join us would be welcome, as long as they could accept our laws and abide by them.

Perfect society would only be if people behaved less like people and more like ants
Because people are generally assholes and ants are awesome

I don't really believe in utopia, because it's impossible with the way people are. There's always somebody who'll find some way to abuse any system, some way to 'cheat'. And people have different opinions on what is 'right' and 'wrong'.
Group of people who basically agree on everything can only stay that - a group of people. The second and third generation will already disagree with the ways of the first one, and the utopia will fall down like a card-house

Exactly what I mean. The human species has both the gift and burden of strong and varying opinions. While it may launch some people ahead, it can keep people firmly behind.

The perfect society is one without humans.
Our emotions get in the way. Our developments mean society needs to constantly adapt. Our inability to stay down and appreciate what we have would be the gaping hole in any plan for a 'perfect' society.
Not to mention that one man's idea of a perfect society may be drastically different from another. Hitler wanted everyone to be Christian, Aryan and hard workers. Andrew Ryan wanted a separate community of Humanity's greatest to never be held down or work for nothing. Many people's ideas would involve very little work. It varies.
The only species I can imagine that could adapt to a "perfect society" is not a species. Robots. Robots are programmed to only think the way they're programmed. They aren't to have clouding emotions and can be told to do things without objection. However, the population could only be as good as the program they are given (if we're talking about an entirely self-sufficient one) as when one problems pops up, if the population doesn't know how to deal with it, it could disrupt the 'perfection' and cause a wave of problems, probably ones they couldn't deal with.

If perfection was possible, God would've done it, instead of letting one of his chief angels fall out of line and become the embodiment of evil itself.
