I was looking into getting an alienware computer. I don't know a whole lot about alienware as a company and was wondering what other people thought of them. I do a lot of graphic intensive things on my computer, games, digital art, etc... I compared prices/features with dell and of course mac. A mac is out of the question. Dell has somewhat similar features, except it seems to have not quite as good as the ones on the alienware system, particularly in the area of graphics cards. Also I have issues with vista and dell only sells vista on their systems.
I don't want to get an alienware just because it looks cool
even though they are awesome.
Anyhow, any input on specs or customer support for alienware would be awesome. Also any other suggestions would be great, except for building my own I'm pretty open to suggestions.

I go where I please, and I please where I go
However, depending on your preferences that could also be a bad thing. You don't get a lot of choice in components, and their prices are hugely inflated compared to if you bought the stuff off newegg and assembled it yourself. My personal feeling is that they're rich boy's toys who just want to plug and play, and if that's what you're looking for that's fine, but you will miss a lot of the "experience" and pride in owning a PC you've built, maintained and bled (literally) into. Going custom is also a lot cheaper.
Alienware ain't going to be doing XP either, at least not for much longer. Microsoft has ended XP's resale license, so PC companies will only be able to sell Vista now.
Do not buy a dell unless you really like India.

It didn't occur to me before either, if it's mad performance you want in a prebuilt box, try looking at HP's blackbird series, although I fear they also suffer from "dell-itis".

That, and Alienware are owned by Dell. Voodoo are owned by HP - Comically the Blackbird 002 appeared around the same time.
Personally, I'd suggest a self build. Simply because you get to know EXACTLY what went where, and why. It may be a lot more work on your part, but honestly, it's not as difficult as it sounds. Just needs some preparation and thought. It should, if you do it right, work out a lot cheaper too.

Like I said in my first post, the only thing I am against is building my own. I know what it takes to put one together, I used to work in a computer store. They didn't let me mess with them very much but I learned enough by watching, but I still can't quite build one completely on my own. I may end up going to that place and getting them to make me a quote for one, that's as close as I'll get to custom building one.

I know the build quality of Dell machines far too well for my own good - They are built by one blind quadroplegics, with no consideration for airflow. The best system they've put together is the top end, water cooled, XPS monster. It's still crapply built, too.
Alienware, at least, have a 'gaming heritage', and their desktop build quality is leagues above Dell - Even though the two companies are joined at the hip. I would suggest Alienware of those two.
If you could, though, find someone who'd build the PC for you (Say, a friend or relative) then you would get infinately more choice of parts, and probably lose a LOT of the cost. Example: What I built for ɤswordhorder cost in the region of £700 less than an equivilently spec'd machine from an 'enthusiast' PC retailer, who're pretty big in the UK, as far as hand built machines go. The saving is obviously dependant on how well you shop for parts, but hey, if you're not interested in that, then s'no big deal.
At least with an Alienware you get a warranty that's easy to deal with :B

I have a dell laptop, and the warranty on it is top notch. I've had maintenance done on it multiple times with no real issues, except they shipped me my most recent new parts and had me install them myself.

A lot of places have been doing the 'ship the parts to the user' thing recently, I think they're getting tight on the amount of money they have to pay their techies in the shop.

My $3k laptop began failing within about six months of receiving it; 18 months later, it's unusable. I continually received horrid tech support and shitty customer service. Despite my laptop's hardware failing while under warranty, they said that they couldn't do anything because it was no longer under warranty (with the implication that the hardware failed after warranty). I can't install Windows on that laptop (it refuses two valid, legally obtained license keys) and I could install Ubuntu, but it would have a hardware access layer failure within five minutes of booting and crash. I had to usually boot the laptop on battery power because it would "overheat" and shut down otherwise.
On the other hand, I heard that someone managed to drop their Alienware laptop out of a second story window and Alienware replaced it no questions asked.
The only Dells I've ever had a problem with were the ones at my high school. I don't even want to think about the sort of abuse those machines must have received.
The Dells that I have had at home are troopers. We have a Dell Dimension 4600 or 4800; I opened it up to clean it around two years ago and I was amazed the damn thing hadn't overheated with the amount of dust and dog fur that were in it. My mom's old laptop (not sure if it was an Inspiron or a Latitude) ran for at least 4 years (though, it was given/loaned to my brother's girlfriend, so I have no idea what's happened to it since). My mom's current Inspiron laptop has worked wonderfully. My Latitude D830 has held up quite nicely in the 9 or 10 months I've had it.
I don't think I can fairly compared my Alienware to my Dell; the Alienware has a single core Intel (2.26Ghz) and the Dell has a Core2 Duo (T7500, 2.20Ghz). The Dell overall runs better, and runs a hell of a lot cooler. The only problem I have had with my Dell is software related and seems to have something to do with Visual Studio.

I have a dell latitude laptop myself. I've had it for 4 years now but not without it's problems. It's had 2 new screens, 3 keyboards, and had to have the hard drive and ram replaced. I was glad I got the good warranty

My Latitude has been good so far (yay!), but I did get the three years of US tech support and the accidental damage thingy. It was like $100 to upgrade to that, how could I not? :B

Well, nowadays building a custom PC is pretty easy. I made my own during the summer, ordered parts from NewEgg. And Voila my very first custom PC.
If you're "scared", there are lots of guides that can help you on choosing the right parts, and even tell you what to do step by step
And I'm pretty sure that we can help you with that also, hmm?
¤Zunii (#24810)

and yes, chances are if I try to build it even with a guide, I will mess something up. I know this because I once rebuilt an old PC with someone checking up on me every so often and still managed to mess something up, and I still don't know what it was.
I could probably build one decently, but if i spend the extra money I can have someone else do it right the first time, and have them fix it for free if they do it wrong.
