Is In Your Base, Killing Your Mans

America seems to be slipping into recession. The federal government lent 85 billion dollars in U.S. currency to AIG insurance. If the government hadn't stepped in, the United State's largest insurer would be bankrupt. It's a Trillion dollar company, I guess it deserved saving. Please tell me, and everyone else, your thoughts about this currently small crisis. Everything from DOW to NASDAQ, or even Obama & McCain's respective policies for the matter.

I had a conversation with someone on another site who didn't believe for a second that the economy was in a recession, or that there were any problems, simply because "businesses had good first quarters". Really? Well that doesn't sound like a good first quarter to me, an 85 billion dollar loan sounds like a pretty shitty quarter.

What happened to "hands off" government anyways? Hasn't that been the US' style?

I thought so. But now it seems they're setting up some stupid plan to keep the banks immune to their payments... >_>

That's just dumb. If the US is so "anti-socialist" they should stick to their guns and leave the banks to fend for themselves. Maybe then all the people who think the US isn't in a recession would shut the hell up, because they wouldn't be able to afford the internet and I wouldn't have to hear about it. :P

          Remembers What Arcades Are

The United States has been at least partially socialist since the New Deal Era of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The liberal left in this country - including myself - is at least partially in favor of creating a more socio-capitalist society in the form of government healthcare, public works projects and other such quality of life improving policies and projects.

Ironically it was the Bush administration that led the largest increase in government in the modern era ... and almost none of this increase has led to an increase in the quality of life for America's working class.

At this point I think it's becoming clear that a "hands off approach" is not working. Corporations have entirely too much power under the law to act as an individual citizen under the constitution and the government has limited abilities to prosecute the failure of these "individuals" for actions which violate the rights of citizens under the constitution. If the tax payers are going to have to bail out major corporations for their mishandling of finances then the government needs to regulate a bit more so these situations don't pop up.

Deregulation in this country is harming rather than helping the average American's pocket book. Anyone who lives in the day to day reality of American Life on the "front lines" knows we've been in a recession for quite some time. The fact that it is affecting the upper crust of our society now is scary as hell. I don't feel bad for them, but it means our entire system is crumbling from the inside out. This recession is going to be here for a while.

I completely agree, but try telling that to anyone who voted for McCain/Bush. :P

Lets hope Obama can shed some fresh light on this situation.

America is falling into socialism at a slow rate. The Communists were right. America will 'fall into their hands like a ripe fruit from a tree'. >.>
