I find the whole Jack Thompson thing really quite funny.

Especially the things he comes out with. Apparently, and this is what he claims, he was called a bisexual paedophile through some nondescript part of Take2's site, which had no reference to him what so ever.

I think he's just an aging mentally damaged lawyer clutching at straws to go down in history.

However, with games like Manhunt and Manhunt 2, I can sort of see where he's coming from, because that kinda thing probably can mess with the heads of already clueless kids.

yeah... but did you hear him bashing games like Final Fantasy (my dear final fantasy...) and Doom, Quake and Halo, that yeah, are kinda violent, but just because some kid cant tell the difference between human and alien, reality and sci fi, doesnt mean they're brain washing kids to kill people. Come on... he even went so far to call Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario evil...

I still stand by the fact that just because a few kids are fucked up in the head, doesnt mean everyone should suffer.

The whole thing can in NO WAY be generalized. Each and every aspect has to be on a person by person basis, and as its hard to make a law that does that, It should be up to the parents. I could write a 10 page paper on this (and I have before, and not for school) but I'm really lazy right now. Basically the reason for my stance is I wanna play what I want, But I have the sense not to play some games that go overbored. For example, Kayne and Lynch is a little out there for me right now. I don't approve of one type of game, and thats a game that the SOLE purpose( or one of the main points) is causing bloodshed/pain or killing innocent people just for the fuck of it. Games that are really gory, such as Gears of War, but are only that way as to add to the detail, is not terribly bad. I mean come on it you get sniped in the head dead on, there CAN'T be a good chance of leaving with your head in one piece. If anything you'd think it would teach kids that there are huge ass consequences for that shit. On that run, that attack Halo are just silly. Granted the original halo has a nice bit of gore (I have to admit that smashing dead bodies repeatedly was fun), but Halo 2 and 3 have reduced that considerably.
Anyway heres my Quick fix for a lot of the Issues my parents have with the games I play:
PUT A DAMN GORE OPTION ON THE GAME!
Games like Assassins Creed and The Darkness are games I just want to hug the creator of as they are rather gory games, and my mom watches me play every once in a while and it's great to be able to turn off the gore so that she doesn't get mad and make me stop. I could care less, truthfully, the gore doesn't give me pleasure (well except for Dead Rising, but brutalization of the demonic and undead is ok by me.) and the only reason I don't turn it off to begin with is that I'm to lazy to look, but after word I usually play the rest of the time with it off.
And as for the Undead and Demonic, thats an area even my parents could careless about. If I'm not fighting Humans, they don't care how violent it is. The Human Vs Human is were I have to start looking for things that might be out of my playability. Games like Assassin's Creed pass the inspection as it's a select number of people killed and for the right cause and the whole game you avoid killing those who don't deserve to die and you get penalized it you do. Unfortunately the people who take that the wrong way and take what I say there to justify killing people if its for YOUR CAUSE as an individual. Thats a whole other argument though.

As I said It's all a Person by Person thing.
Only one thing I want added to games and thats a Gore option.

Jack Thompson. he's unprofessional and an aging nutter. It's just a shame that it took an unprofessional aging nutter to bring an important issue to the eyes of the public. I have no doubt that violent media has a negative effect on society, that's obvious, but people refuse to believe this, especially gamers. Does that mean I think violent games are bad? Hell no, but I do think it's a question of parenting, marketing and taste. I believe Manhunt should be allowed to be made, that's a basic right of free speech, but I do think that it's more a question of taste and purpose.

Do we really want to be playing games where you strangle a man with a plastic bag in an alleyway for kicks with no real story or entertainment benefit? I leave that up to the consumer as I believe people are smart enough to make their own decisions on such issues.

I would also like to point out that the sort of people who go on a VT style massacre are already seriously unstable, and could be triggered by anything including videogames, but also TV, literature, film and music. So, let's ban all forms of art because it might be construed as a trigger for violent acts in our beloved children, completely ignoring the fact that these things happen as a result of parenting and government (in a psychiatric health sense) care failure.

I feel once again through the process of ranting my post has kind of missed the point, but whatever.

It's totally feasible to want to ban games, I mean, there are already lots of good ammo for JT, and Rockstar is just feeding him.

JT just can't differentiate between 'okay' games and 'mind twisting' games.

By the way, if you vote Hilary into office, odds are we might actually be threatened by bans, considering she's big on fighting gamers...
