Kicking Ass And Chewing Gum And All Outta Gum

Now I'm not a crazy MMO fan, but I do enjoy the games. I've played a fair amount of both WoW and CoH, but I've been watching a particular game as of late.

Warhammer Online Age of Reckoning (long name eh?) might become my most looked forward to game of 2008. Not because I particularly have any great fanaticism with Warhammer, but because the game looks fantastic.

By far the best part of this game is the class diversity. Of course in ever race there is a tank, a spellcaster, and then a ranged class or a buffer. But the thing is, even the Tank is different from normal Tanks in some way. What Warhammer Online is doing is effectively allowing every race to have the same Class that shares a basic principle but a lot of variability.

Of course it has the standard MMO stuff, with a big emphasis on PVP and their motto "War is all around you" and seems to be, balance wise, pretty solid.

On a stylistic note, the Chaos army has to have some of the coolest and most original looking characters in the whole game. The Chaos Marauder might possibly be the greatest character class I've ever seen. Not to mention that the spellcaster gets to fly around on a demonic disk the whole time. Cool!

I very much look forward to the game, and by my estimation it won't end up being one of those "looks great but plays awful" projects. As a testament to that, check out some of the podcasts and informational videos. Check it out!

That actually looks pretty cool. I'm not much into MMOs, but this one looks like it will be quite good.

it's pvp based which is pretty cool, but I wish they'd done a 40k MMO.

Worrying is about as effective as chewing gum to solve algebra

I think a 40K MMO is too broad (Since it covers basically the entire universe) you'd be looking at a massive, massive install, and then the server costs for each galaxy, even if they did it Mass Effect style (One or two landable planets per galaxy) it'd still be massive beyond belief.

A 40K MMO based on Inquisitor, though, would be a lot easier to manage, as it would be entirely single character based, and the 'bands' of inquisitors lends itself insanely well to MMO styled groups, and the character customisation (If you've ever played it, you'll know what I'm on about, if not, it's very similar to D&D in that respect) lends itself nicely to a character creation section.

It'd cost a lot, and be in an already saturated market, but that doesn't seem to stop anyone else.

Agreed and agreed. A 40k MMO would sorta crazy to make. It would get pretty popular if it was though, but I doubt many gamers would like wasting a lot of space on such a massive game.

The only way I could see it working was if it was done in Galaxies, with a pricing structure that lowers the cost for an additional galaxy, provided you get a digital copy (It'd be too hard to do a hard copy for less based on owning another galaxy, without buying them in groups, which is possible (Say, the cluster of galaxies around the Eye of Terror) but would still take an awful lot of planning and other fun stuff). At least that way you can pick and chose the galaxies you want, reducing the space consumed on the HDD. It'd have to be done based on the growth of the community, though. There's no point having several dozen galaxies with only a few players per galaxy, as I'm sure you're aware.

So you mean once you buy a CD with one galaxy, you buy another with one more galaxy? Like an extension?

Essentially, yes. But it'd have to be offered cheaper digitally if you've already bought one or two (I don't know, say £5) or completely free like Eve expansions.

Sadly I never got very far with Tau, my usual tactics of overwhelming numbers didn't last long on the table top, and well, DoW has unit caps online, so it doesn't work so well there, either :(

Well, I'm fairly certain the game isn't focusing on that aspect of the game. If you listened to the one about Keeps and capture points, a big part of the game will almost be colonizing, IE, capturing forts for your Guild and converting them into strongholds and keeps to defend.

They've really not said anything too much about PvE, although I've seen a few videos of the monsters which look very cool.

Aye, I was reading a gamer's magazine recently...And I saw this, I'm not a Warhammer 40k fan, but I have a few friends who play it. A computer game would be awesome, so I'm really looking forward to it coming out.

I think it's released summer this year?
